Overcoming the Fear of Fire
Riki Schumacher
Fear of Fire is tailored to the craft person, and meant
specifically to help you overcome any fear or hesitation you might have
about using a mixed gas or butane torch. You
know about that kind of torch, the one you saved
up for, or received as a gift, buried deep in your garage, gathering dust, or stored unopened somewhere
in the house! Or, have you wanted to
purchase a torch, making it a useful tool in creating
your mixed media and jewelry, but you have no
idea what to buy, or how to use it?
This class is aimed
specifically to help take those fears away, and shine some light on the mystery
of using a mixed propane/oxygen gas Smith Little Torch, and a variety of micro butane torches,
for your jewelry creations.
In this workshop Riki
will walk you through a step-by-step process on how to light these torches, and
the basics on how to operate them. She will show you what gases she prefers to
work with. Also covered will be which torch is best for which purpose, as well
as how to fill them, light them and some safety issues. Riki’s wish is that
by the end of this workshop, you will know which torch is best for your use.
What can you create with these kinds of torches? How can learning about
heat add to your jewelry skills? Here are just a
few things you can do with these tools, and the skill
to use them.
In this
workshop Riki will demonstrate these techniques, and help you determine which
torch is best for your needs:
- attaching metal to metal
- attaching jump rings to metal
- soldering jump rings
- ball up wire for earrings or headpins
- ball up wire to finish off bracelets
- anneal metal to soften for shaping
- floating solder on metal
There are so many applications for using heat in jewelry making
and mixed media. For instance, you can
make bezels to set stones, create one-of-a-kind pieces, solder mini hardware
for attachments, etc. There are endless
possibilities.
Are you ready to join her
in this journey of unlocking the mystery of fire? Her goal is to have you jump
in and begin using that torch you have been hoping to,
but have been too hesitant to try one until now, or feeling comfortable enough
to purchase any of these torches and skillfully handle them with your creations.
Knowing how to use heat with jewelry and mixed media designs unlocks so many doors, and
opens your mind to expanded design techniques. $45.00

Basic Elements of Chinese Landscape Painting
Henry X. Li
Join Chinese brush painting artist, Henry Li for an in depth journey into Beginning Chinese Landscape Painting.
Henry says, "A Chinese art student does not learn how to paint by going out and superficially copying the appearance of nature, any more than one becomes a classical musician by learning to mimic birds singing. As the music student learns her/his keys and key relationships, the Chinese painter has to start by learning what are known as the "type forms," or "fractal elements."
These are the evidences of essential reality, distilled through centuries of observation of transient effects, where the painter can apply them according to well established principles of harmony and composition. Students will learn basic type forms of various trees and rocks in traditional Chinese landscape painting, based on these traditional elements. $85.00
